The main differences between sea containers and railway containers
The main difference between a sea container and a railway container is the cost of production. Boxes for ground transportation are significantly cheaper due to the use of thinner metal and traditional paintwork.
Also, railway containers are characterized by smaller sizes and carrying capacity.
Water containers are more airtight, durable, and their service life is on average 5 years longer.
The choice of packaging depends on the route and distance of transportation, the type and quantity of luggage. Bulk goods require vertical loading and therefore require a sealed structure with a removable or suspended roof. Machines and large mechanisms are easier to move on FlatRack container modules - platforms with end walls, which are used specifically in rail transportation. High loads are transported in open-top boxes.
Transport logistics strives for optimization and standardization, as a result of which universal boxes that can be moved both by water and land transport have become widespread. Such structures are involved in multimodal (combined) transportation without unloading and loading of contents at intermediate points. Therefore, the difference between a sea container and a rail container becomes less noticeable.
Features of sea containers
The characteristic design differences of sea containers are due to the specific conditions of the external aquatic environment. High humidity, the impact force of waves, and exposure to salt require increased strength of the frame and durability of the outer coating.
Sea containers are made of high-quality metal (corrugated sheet steel up to 2 mm thick) and must have external stiffeners. To ensure moisture resistance, a sealed container base is used. The outside of the structure is coated with protective anti-corrosion paint based on polymer materials. Thanks to this, its service life can be 15-20 years.
Features of railway containers
Trains carry out freight transportation within a region or country.
There are small-tonnage (with a load capacity of up to 3 tons), medium-tonnage (3-5 tons), large-tonnage (10-30 tons) boxes. The most popular are three- or five-ton containers.
Environmental conditions during land transportation allow containers to be made from thinner metal and do not require a coating of increased durability. The service life of such structures is 10-15 years.
Railway containers have a wide range of models: there are boxes with a tension roof, open top, classic (sealed), platform type, and refrigerators.
Transportation of goods by rail can be carried out in any weather conditions. During stops or waiting for unloading, the railway container acts as a temporary warehouse for storing contents. Its protection is ensured by the use of sealing.
